Weft & nano Care

Here's a few tips on how to care for your long-term hair extensions. Home maintenance is key to ensuring the longest lasting experience with your extensions.

A few things to know...

Got new hand-tied hair extensions or thinking about getting them? Keeping your extensions looking amazing is key! As a stylist with over 20 years of experience, I’m sharing essential care tips to help you maintain and extend the life of your extensions. This guide covers the dos and don’ts for beautiful, long-lasting results, especially for hand-tied extensions.

Do Hair Extensions Require A Lot of Maintenance?

Yes, but not too much. While they can be low-maintenance, some daily care is essential to keep them looking healthy and prolong their life. With proper care, you can also reduce damage to your natural hair and extend the time between move-up appointments. A simple routine is all you need for great results.

How to Take Care of Your Hair Extensions: The Do's

Brush Often - Proper Brushing Tips for Hair Extensions

Hair extensions can tangle like natural hair, so regular brushing is key. Brush at least twice daily—morning and night—and whenever tangles form. Carry a wide-toothed comb or extension-safe brush with flexible, boar bristles.

To prevent breakage, support your row or weft by holding it while brushing, and start from the ends, working up. Be gentle to avoid damage or looping at the seams, which could require replacement. Never brush wet extensions, as they’re more prone to breakage; instead, brush before washing.

Limit Washing Frequency:

Wondering how often to wash your hair with extensions? Limit it to once or twice a week to prevent drying, which can cause breakage and shedding. When washing, double shampoo for a clean scalp and rinse thoroughly to remove all residue. Apply conditioner only from mid-shaft to ends, focusing on dry areas and avoiding the roots. Always brush before wetting your hair, never after. Proper washing and conditioning are essential, and product choice matters too.

Choose the Right Hair Products:

The products you use affect the health of your hair extensions. To keep them hydrated and prevent breakage, follow these tips:

Sulfate-Free Products: Extensions dry out easily as they don’t receive natural oils like your hair. Avoid sulfates to prevent damage.

Use Hair Oil: Apply oil from mid-shaft to ends to keep extensions moisturized.

Hair Masks: Use monthly for deep hydration, replacing conditioner.

Heat Protection: Always use a heat and UV protectant to avoid damage, especially for blonde extensions.

Other Products: Use styling products sparingly and double shampoo to remove buildup.

Products to Avoid for Hair Extensions:

To keep extensions healthy, avoid products with sulfates, as they can dry out your hair. Skip strengthening or keratin products, which can make extensions brittle. Avoid ingredients like dimethicone, quaternium compounds, sodium hydroxide, Moroccan oil, coconut oil, and silicone-based products. Always check with your stylist before trying new products. Use only moisture-rich, salon-quality items.

Prevent Tangling While Sleeping

To avoid tangling overnight, brush your hair in the morning and before bed. Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent matting and frizz. Secure your hair in a loose ponytail, top knot, or braids before sleep to minimize tangling. Never sleep with wet hair, as it’s more prone to breakage and frizz. Following these tips will help protect your extensions.

What Not to Do With Hair Extensions:

Limit Heat Styling: Extensions dry out easily, so reduce heat use. Wash only once or twice a week to minimize blow-drying, and touch up lightly with heat tools when needed. Always use heat protectant and opt for the lowest temperature.

Avoid Extended Updos: Don’t leave your hair in a bun or ponytail for days, as it can lead to tangling and matting. Let your hair down and brush before bed.

Watch Your Sunscreen: Sunscreens with avobenzone or octocrylene can discolor extensions, especially blonde ones. Choose extension-safe sunscreens like Goldie Locks Sheer Mineral Sunscreen.

Do's for Hair Extension Care:

- Sleep with a loose ponytail, bun, or braids to prevent tangling.
- Use a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction and breakage.
- Brush hair daily—once in the morning and before bed to detangle.
- When brushing, support the top of the weft to avoid tugging.
- Wash your hair twice a week, double shampooing, and rinse thoroughly.
- Use sulfate-free shampoos/conditioners and professional products recommended by your stylist.
- Apply oil to the mids and ends to prevent dryness and brittleness.

Don'ts for Hair Extension Care:

- Never go to bed with wet hair.
- Avoid excessive heat styling, as it can dry out and damage your extensions.
- Don’t leave your hair in a bun or ponytail for multiple days—always take it down and brush it daily.
- Stay away from sunscreens with avobenzone or octocrylene, which can discolor blonde extensions.
- Skip strengthening or keratin products; focus on moisture-rich salon-quality products instead.
- Avoid exposure to ocean or pool water, as salt and chlorine can damage your extensions.
